Physical vs digital

Digital downloads of video games, or media in general, got hit with a lot of flak in the past years. And for a good reason. You do not really own them. You are just buying a license to use them and the media you "bought" can change or be taken from you without the need for your consent.
On the other hand, when you buy physical media, you actually own it. Nobody has the right to break into your home and take your discs. You can even sell them.

So, physical media are just clearly better, right? Wrong. These two are not the only options, even though a lot of people on the internet act like if they were. Did they all forget about GoG and itch.io? You can get an installer of the game, which has no hooks attached and works offline or even when the company no longer exists. So you get all the benefits of digital without most of the downsides.

Really, the only downside of digital is that there are only a few companies, which allow you to actually own the games and even then you can not really sell your copy. Publishers try to maximize their profit, so they are scared of piracy and want as much control over the games they sell you as possible. You can not avoid that even with physical media. Discs pretty much always had copy protection in them and you have to jump through hoops to make a working backup copy. Did you know that empty discs have a special piracy tax, which makes them more expensive? The publishers expect you to pirate. We are all criminals in their eyes.

As I said, this applies to all media. There is not much of a difference between a physical copy of a game, movie, book or music album. Movies, books and music are plagued with the same online services, where you can only buy a limited license to use their product and physical copies have copy protection (except for books, but not for the lack of trying). Similarly, there are a few places, where you can actually buy your own copy.

If you truly want to own your games, movies, books and music, you have to stop accepting being labeled as a criminal and buy much less DRM protected media.
